Nuntius Coffee Cup
Designed & Manufactured for a Private Client
Made by hand,
from screen to reality
Nuntius means "news bringer." It's a coffee set for a private client who wanted an object that could sit on a yacht or a boardroom table and start a conversation either way. The cup stands alone or on its plate; the plate works as an ashtray and as a vessel for reading Turkish coffee fortunes. I designed the form, printed the mother molds, cast the plaster working molds, then slip-cast, glazed, and fired the trial batch by hand. The crimson glaze was chosen to hold its own against white decks and grey conference rooms.

Exploring the desire
The design encapsulates the movement of the movement of the boats on the mediterranean, and the act of drinking the coffee.
Form is sketched in a naturally pleasing and dynamic proportion and holds exactly one serving of turkish coffee or a double espresso from the user calibrated FRANKE coffee machine.
It is meant to be its own entity, similar to a pet or a mascot. Not in the same shape of service cups, this creates the unmistakeable visual signiture for the owner of the yatches or the properties, making sure clients know who to adress.
Can’t beat a geometric analysis
After the brief is analyzed and the client is known, if all is clear what’s left is to draw it out and get it ready for modelling.
Made for the users habbits
The users are smokers and enjoy their morning coffee with their cigarillos, the one finger hold handle alongside the base of the form is meant for easy holding alongside a cigarillo using a single hand.
With the way ceramics dry in the mold, the bottom of the form is the heaviest part, making the form stable and bottom heavy to minimize the chance of spilling during usage.

To prepare the initial mold, I used FDM and Resin printing for the master molds.
Out of the mold
What comes out the mold is deliberatley unfinished. The ceramic needs to be hand finished and prepped for the glazing.
A deep red over white and the blue.
Glaze acts different than paint, in the hot kiln it becomes a hot syrup flowing and casing the mud in a candy like coating. Fillets and the surfaces are created on top of the initial form in the form of a smooth liquid. With the red, the users can start their day with the energy they need of the coffe on their heaven, biting from the apple.

Getting it ready
Ceramics dry from the outer surface to the inner in the mold. You need to account the drying from the design. The wall thickness of the design needs to be arranged by timing the duration the ceramic is left in the mold.
When the product is out the mold it needs some cleaning, you want to leave it coarse enough for the glaze to stick but smooth enough to give the surface tratement. When the glaze is cooking in the oven, it will melt like sugar, and you will achieve the smooth surfaces you want.
